Wattage rating

Would a 55 watt receiver match safely with a max input of a 50 watt speaker? Or would the speaker become damage because of the higher rated WPC? Many thanks!

This is a classic question, and also a controversial one. The 50 watt spec of the speaker indicates that you can safely feed it 50 clean (no distortion) watts continuously. The 55 watt spec of the amplifier, on the other hand, does not necessarily mean that the amplifier can output 55 clean watts continuously into any load.

In contrast to the indications, you may well end up in a situation where your speakers force your amplifier into clipping if you crank up the volume to max. If this happens the risk of damage to your speakers will be very high.
