Discuss Linn Unidisk SC
Reliability of the SC
By LostnAmerica, 25. August 2018, 01:08.
Greeting, I have the opportunity to purchase an SC model that doesn't read disks. I'm no tech but seems to be just a laser assembly? are these units worth the while: to repair etc? Thank you.
Cheers

I have never owned a Linn product. But I have owned a variety of other Unidisc type players, and they have all had weak optical blocks - probably because of the dual-laser nature of blocks for reading both CDs and DVDs (not to mention Blu-ray, when that is in the game).
On the positive side, new lasers have been rather cheap in all cases, and fairly easy to replace. If you are confident in your ability to do this work yourself, then it is worth considering.
On the negative side, it can be a bit hard to get a good spare part. In my experience the replacements have a tendency to burn out rather quickly, which makes the whole proposition a lot less attractive.
So, having done this a number of time on other players, all I can really say is that I would not do it again.

Thank you Maximus, I appreciate your insight on the feasibility of my endeavor. I will probably pass on this one but ha e found Linn 1.1 for <$700 with only a drawer issue and have found a reliable source for repair of same. Still, your suggested path of avoidance will stick with me.
Thanks again, I’m hoping someone with experience with the Linn unidisks will show with more insight on reliability of those players. Probably best to avoid, just looking for the best at more than reasonable cost....
Cheers.
